CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING. SUCCESS OF AUCKLANDERS. CUNNOLD AND MISS STOCKLEY. [BY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.] CHRISTCHURCH. Sunday. A large crowd was present at tiie opening carnival of the New Zealand amateur swimming championships at the Municipal Tepid Baths on Saturday evening. Owing to the withdrawal of Miss Stand, who is not swimming this year, and Miss Jepson, of Otago, no heats were necessary in the 100 yds ladies' championship, while the withdrawal of C. Atkinson made heats unnecessary in fcho mile championship for men. The results are as follow: — One Mile New Zealand Men's Championship.—E. V. Cunnold (Auckland), 1; L. Hill (Canterbury), 2; D. Lindsay (South Canterbury), 3.. Also started: 0. Eversieigh (Wellington), J. Mi-Lean (Otago), L. J. Moorhouso (Canterbury) and D. Pelham (Auckland). The swimmers plunged together and over the first five laps of 33 l-3yds each the men were fairly even, but Cunnold and Lindsay were slightly in the lead. At the eighth" lap the Auckland and South Canterbury men had increased their lead to about Byds, and Moorhouse. who was then about a length away, pulled' out. Cunnold, Lindsay and Hill were together at the tenth lap, and were leading by about syds, with McLean behind. When 16 laps had gone Cunnold led. with Hill and Lindsay second. Eversieigh here withdrew. " Cunnold had a lead of 15yds at the 20th lap, with Hill and Lindsay equal second. McLean and Pelham were about 3yds behind. The positions remained practically the same until the 26th lap was reached, when Cunnold increased his lead by 2yds, and McLean drew up to Hill and Lindsay, who were about 18yds behind Cunnold. At tha •30th lap Cunnold was still leading by about 13yds, with Hill swimming ' faster second. Cunnold led by 20yds at the 31st lap, with Hill second, and Lindsay, who began to show signs of tiring, third. At the 36th lap Cunnold still maintained his lead, with Hill second and McLean and Lindsay (equal) third. When tho 42nd lap was reached Pelham dropped out. Cunnold increased his lead to about 28yds at the 44th lap, with Hill second and McLean and Lindsay about 25yds in the rear of Hill. When the 52nd, the last lap, was reached the Aucklander was leading by 30yds, with Hill second. McLean and Lindsay were about the same distance behind Hill, and in an ezaciting finish Lindsay beat McLean by about.3yds. Cunnold's time was 25min 45 2-ssec, and that of Hill 26m in 12sec. IOOYds Ladies' Championship.—Miss E. Stockley (Auckland), 1; Miss P. Page (Auckland), 2; Miss A. Mather (Canter-: bury), 3. Also started: Misses D. Walsh (Canterbury), E. Fisher (Canterbury), and P. Brant (Taranaki). The plunge was a good one, but right from the start Miss Stockley took the lead, which she maintained throughout and won by 4vds. Miss Mather was close behind Miss Page. Time, 69 4-ssec/ IOOYds New Zealand Men's Championship.—Final : A. D. Adamson (Auckland), 1; N. S. Batchelor (Canterbury), 2: N. Dowsett (Wanganni), 3. The start was an excellent one. Dowsett led over the first 33 l-3yds and touched that mark first, with Enright close behind. Adamson, however, drew abreast of him. and in a close fight won, with Batchelor a close second. Time, 6150 C. 500 Yds Flying Squadron.—Auckland Centre, 1; Canterbury, 2; Wellington, 3. Won by 3yds. Time, Smin 16 3-ssec. In a heat of the New Zealand water polo championship, Auckland beat Canterbury B by 12 goals to 1.
