BARMAIDS DISAPPEARING.
WHAT A CENSUS REVEALS. ONLY 220 FOUND EMPLOYED. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRPSS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON. Friday. The Department of Labour, whose duty it is. to see that barmaids are registered, recently asked the Police Department to take a census of barmaids throughout the Dominion. This census showed that of 1269 barmaids who were registered when the Act came into operation in 1911, there are now only 220 registered barmaids working in bars. A few may liaye been absent from their employment at the time of the census, but they would not increase the number to any extent. It was also found during the taking of the census that there was only one woman employed in a bar who was not in possession of a registration certificate. The census shows that employment of women in bars has been enormously reduced since 191,1..
