THE TARANAKI MEETING. STQSK WINS THE CUP, _ [EI TELEGRAPH. —DWS COE.HESPOKOEXT.] XEW PLYMOUTH. Thursday. Tho Taranaki Jockey Club's Autumn Meeting opened to-day in fine weather, and there was a large attendance. •The programme opened with the Waitara Hurdle Race, fqj which event Wench ruled a very warm favourite, carrying more than double tho sum invested on Bonny Bill, the licit best backed. Wench lost a couple of leagths af. the barrier, and the order over the first fence was White Ranger, with Bonny Rill and Savory together, Bad V, ouch next. At tho High School bend White Ranger was leading from Mountain Gold, Bonny Rill. Wench and Savory. Entering the straight Wench had moved tip into third place, and after passing the stand she was just in behind White Ranger. Turning for home White Ranger was well clear of Wench, but only beat tho favourite by about half a length at the finish, with Mountain Gold a length and a-half away in third place. Ring the Bell, Toapoaiti, Mint Leaf and Orazorte were scratched for tho Juvenile Handicap. Tho two-year-old Oration was made favourite, carrying £SOO more than Siaosi. Oration, Shut Eye-, Siaosi and Nancy Leo was the order out of tho barrier, and the same order was maintained to the straight. In the run home Siaosi beaded Shut Eye. but he could not get up ,to Oration, the Australian-bred colt winning by half a length, with Shut- Eyo two lengths : further back third, and Lucernal fourth, Quest Scores Surprise, Hipo, Poutna and Nancy Lee were withdrawn from tho Flying Handicap. Rational Was the popular fancy, and he earned considerably more money than Lady Ben Uric!: and Civility, who were evenly backed. Lady Ben tine!-: led at the start from Civility. Rational and The Lamb. At the five furlongs Lady Bentick was still leading, with Rational, Civility,and The Lamb following in that , order, while Quest, was last. there was no change until nearing the. straight, the order round the home turn bemg Civility and Lady Bcntinck from Rational and Avola. In the run home Quest came up very fast.on tho outside, and won by about si length from Pelham, # with Civility half-a-head further back, third. Rational wa» fourth. , : Scxatclungs reduced tne field in the Moturoa Electric Stakes to 11. _ Naston was ruade favourite, 'and Gtumre and Sovena were fairly evenly supported. Of the remainder Insurance carried most money. Herculean. Roburant and Master Lucerne was the order as they moved oil, but Sovena quickly went to tho front from Master Lucerne, Nastori and Roburant. Master Lucerne led into the straight, with Uncle Dave his- nearest attendant, uncle "Dave finished on well and won by a length and a-half from All Wind, who came very fast from the distance. Master Lucerne was another haLf-length back third, and Quilfire close up fourth. Stork's Easy Win, Pelham was withdrawn from the Taranaki Cup, which was productive of a great race. Town Bank started favourite, but there Was only a few pounds between him and Stork, Muraahi, Landslide, and Surveyor, the betting being wonderfully even. lne ; field jumped out of the barrier m perrect • line, and when the contestants settled down j Landslide was leading from Malatour, Surveyor, The Banker, and Spoony. Pa3suig the stand the first time. Landslide was leading from Spoony and The Banker. Turning jnio the* back stretch, Landslide was slightly in front of Malatour, with , Spoony, Che Banker, Surveyor. Stork, and Town Bank . together next. Surveyor went to the front at the high school fence, Landslide, Malatour, Spoony, and The Banker following in that order. Surveyor still held the advantage round the home turn, from Malatour, The Bankar, and Stork. The latter then put in a great run, and, drawing away, won easily by two and a half lengths from Spoony, with Tho Banker half a-head further back third, and Surveyor a similar distance back fourth. Malatour and Town Bank were the next to finish. Mountain Gold was the only withdrawal from the Okato Handicap, for which Valencia was a little better backed than Mountain Bell. Of the others, Troilus and Fire Brigade were best supported. Troilus soon took command, and at the end of the first furlong was lending from Close Fire, Fire Brigade, and Valencia, Interest, and Mountain Bell. Taitaiata then moved up to Troilus, and: he was slightly in front rounding the High School bend, with Mountain Bell and Interest next. Troilus was again rj . front turning for home, wi th Mountain Bell,- Valencia, and Taitaiata following in that order. Troilus held the advantage and won by ft bare half length from Mountain Bell, with Valencia another length and ahalf back third. Taitaiata was fourth. Uialla Scores. Malatour was tho only scratching from the Mimi Welter Handicap. Tirana was ; sliglitly better backed than imperial Spark, and Esthonia was best backed of the remainder. Uralla went to the front, from the rise of the barrier, and staying it put, won by a bare half-length from Imperial Spark, with Passionate about a length farther back third. Mautu was fourth. Bevis, Mountain Bell, All Wind, and King Neva. were withdrawn from the Timaru Handicap, leaving a field of ten. Rafa was made favourite, with Starshell and Wilderness also well backed. Rafa led at the start from Canibee and Starshell. and later from Starshell, Wilderness, and General Pryde. At the High School bend. General Pryde moved up into second place, with Starshell third, and Wee Sandy and Wilderness following. Rafa had a big lead entering the straight, and. won pulling up by two lengths firtfm Wilderness, who got up in time to beat General Pryde for second place by half a-length. Blue Peter was fourth.
