NAVIGATION OF FUTURE

ENGINEERS' DISCUSSION, DIESEL ENGINE ADVOCATED. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. ■SRecd. 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, Feb. 11. A remarkable discussion took place to-day at a meeting of the Society of Arts. Sir James Fortescuo-Flannery, president of the S'ociafy of Consulting Engineers, predicted that the Diesel engine would shortly entirely displace the steam boiler at sea. No type of machinery lent itself more thoroughly to standardisation at present, he said. Developments toward advanced standardisation would encourage the general use of Diesel machinery for navigation. Lord Invernairn, chairman of William Beardmore and Co., Ltd., engineers, in opening the discussion, said that if the Navy substituted Diesel engines for steam it would effect such economy as ■would- make the mouth of the Chancellor of the Exchequer water. It would extend the range of light cruisers from 4000 to 12,000 knots. The Japanese Ambassador agreed that great changes were imminent. He appealed for assistance for Japan in securing supplies of oil.
