THE SMOKE NUISANCE.
Sir,—l am pleased to see that someone has protested against the smoke nuisance because the way columns of black smoke are emitted from locomotive funnels without intermission is really disgraceful. There is a perfect little curiosity on view at any time in Newmarket sidings that has extraordinary abilities as an offensive smoke producer and what with it and the neighbouring workshop and adjacent factories the pace is a ci acker. The atmosphere of Auckland is naturally beautifully clear, yet 't is nearly always marred by what is an easily avoidable condition. And a condition that when remedied will result in tho saving of thousands of tons of our chief asset This, without considering the loss occasioned through more frequent repaintings of dwellings and corrosion of stone and iron and concrete due to sulphuric acid being formed. Or greater by far than these, the loss through the spread of pulmonary consumption and pneumonia among the people, which diseases have always abated very considerably when diminution of smoke has been insisted upon in the* cities cif the older countries. It is reported that an Auckland visitor awards pride of place for cleanliness to New Plymouth. I think there is little doubt that civic prido is greater developed in many other places than in this city and finds expression not only in tho provision of fine thoroughfares and beautiful buildings, etc., but in aa insistancs at all times that absolute clean* liness shall prevail.
