SYDNEY'S POPULATION.

MILLION M ARK PASSED. LITTLE JUBILANCE EXPRESSED. [from oub OWN- correspondent.] SYDNEY. Feb. 16. Sydney has passed the million mark in population, the number of inhabitants of the metropolis on December 31 being 1,008,500. Sydney's growth is altogether out of proportion to the growth of tho State as a whole. Here are the opinions of some who are most interested in the subject;— Archbishop Wright: "To have reached tho million mark in the city of Sydney is a remarkable achievement, of which we may rightly be proud. At the sanio time our pride must be tempered by reflection as to whether tho city has grown at'tho expense of the country, or how far the population of the country is adequate to support so great a city area," President of the. Millions Club (%ir Arthur Rickard).—"The Millions Club does not wind up now. Its objective was to see millions in tho State, not ono million in Sydney, as many people believed. I do not think there is anything to bo tremendously jubilant about in Sydney reaching a million. It would be very much better if it was tho State that had reached the three-millions mark." _ , President of the Retail Traders Association (Mr. D. C. Millen).—'T am pleased to see the population of Sydney crowing, but I hope this is not happening at tho expense of the country population. We want more primary producers. Centralisation of population into big cities is not good for a young country like Australia. I think our cities arc getting too big in comparison with the population of tho country." V . ~ President of Sydney Chamber ol Commerce (Mr. James M. Dunlop).— "While I note with interest tho fact that our fine city of Sydney has reached the million mark in population, I hope that the flow of immigration will tend to settle greater numbers of people on the land, thus increasing our primary production and making more attractive and progressive some of our provincial centres, which are not advancing as they should.
