WHANGAREI PLAYING AREA.
USE OF RECLAMATION. EXPERIMENT BY CLUBS [fit IBIJEOaAPH.—OWH CrOKaESPOXDENT. ] WHANGAREI. Thursday. Work of an experin. -ntal nature on a portion of the Whangarei Harbour Board's extensive reclamation of former mangrove swamps is being carried out by a combined executive representing the hockey and cricket clubs. Should these experiments prove satisfactory and Whangarei players obtain a reasonably good ground, it is safe to predict that in cricket especially Whangarei will do better ir. the future. So far ari area of about six and a-half acres has been ploughed, disced, harrowed and drained, the cost of thfc work up to dale being £4l 19s. At a meeting of delegates from both clubs last night it was decided to ti|e F drain, and grass'aboet-three :acres. ; The remainder of the area is to be crossdrained but not tiled in the meantime. If the grassing of the first three acres proves satisfactory the clubs will proceed to complete the work. The wholo of the work is being paid for out of interest earned on the original sum collected by both clubs and it is not intended to interfere with the unless the experiment proves sufficiently satisfactory to warrant this course.
