TIMBER FOR SCHOOLS.

PRODUCT OF PRISON MILL, MATERIAL AT COST PRICE. A scheme by which prison labour in the State sawmill at Erua will be utilised to produce timber at cost price for tha construction of new schools was explained yesterday by the Minister for Education, Sir James Parr. The mill is run by the Prisons Department, and is engaged cutting rirau, matai, and totara, the bulk of the output being taken by the railways and the Public Works The mill is ©quipped with a modern plant, and about 40 prisoners are employed under a competent foreman. Sir James Parr stated that the Minister in charge of prisons was desirous of helping him to reduce the cost ot school construction and additional machinery was being installed. It was hoped to produce the necessary timber for schools at cost price, and the Auckland and other North Island Education Boards were having the scheme submitted to them.
