MATERNITY SITE. TOWN SQUARE PROPOSAL, [BY IE I .EG HA PH. —OW X CORRESPONDENT.] HAMILTON. Thursday. The Hamilton Borough Council met last evening, the Mayor, Mr. J. R. low, presiding. With refercnco to the request for a site for a fire station at Frankton, the Legal and Finance Committee recommended that tho Mayor and a valuer meet representatives of tho board and discuss terms on which the power station sito in Kent Street might bo utilised as a future fire station site, if both bodies should come to terms. It was further recommended that the council's representatives on tho Fire Board report to tho council concerning the operations of the X' ire Board, moro particularly on the value which the council was getting for its annual contributions to tho board. The proposal concerning the erection of a maternity homo at Hamilton was also reported on by tho Legal and Finance Committee, which recommended that, tho I borough solicitor bo instructed to arrange the necessary steps for the legislation to authorise the council to purchase land for the purpose of providing a sito. A committee comprising tho Mayor and Messrs. O. R. Farror and P. H. Watts, recently set up to go info tne question of the assistant engineer's proposal to excavate part of Garden Place with a view to forming a town square, reported that it approved of the general proposals but before dealing with the matter further recommended that the council ask for Mr. J. H. Wright's opinion on the values of tho lands to bo purchased and the estimated values when tho work had been completed. Mr. J. McKinnon suggested that as the borough engineer had not been asked for an opinion on the matter it would be the correct procedure to do so before calling in any outsido opinions. After considerable discussion the matter was referred back to the committee for further consideration, the committee to ask tho engineer to submit a report on the engineering aspect of the scheme at the earliest possible moment. A recommendation from tho works committoe that a further streets loan of £19,000 be raised to complete the schedule was approved.
