SUGAR AGAIN LOWER.

REDUCTION OF 30s A TON, SIXTH WITHIN NINE MONTHS. AGGREGATE FALL OF 25 P. C. A reduction of 30s a ton in the price of all grades of raw and refined sugar, golden syrup and treacle is announced by the Colonial Sugar Refining Company, to Operate from to-day. Tile reduction is the sixth made within nine months, the aggregate fall in price from May of last year being £9 a ton, or about 25 per cent. From to-day the wholesale price of No. 1A sugar in Auckland will be £26 a ton, and the prices of the other grades and by-products will vary accordingly. The successive reductions are accounted for by the fact that the sugar industry is now almost back to normal. Production was limited during the war owing .to various factors, but the output has recently expanded greatly, and there has been the inevitable reaction in the world markets. Of particular note is the increasing production of beet sugar on the Continent, and consequently an easier demand for cane sugar has followed. The wholesale reduction should be reflected in retail prices, and will be welcomed by housewives, as it has come in time to lower the cost of making most jams and preserves. Manufacturers of jams, biscuits, and confectionery will also be favourably affected.
