THE MAIN ROAD SOUTH.
DEVIATION AT BOMBAY. QUESTION OF SUITABLE ROUTE. The question of the route to be taken by the Great South Road past Bombay, under the Main Highways scheme, was discussed by the council of the Auckland Autoiniobile Association last evening. A letter was received from the Opaheke-Bcmbay-Karaka Ratepayers* Association drawing attention to the attempt being made by the Franklin County Council to have the route altered, so that the main highway would pass through Pukckohe. It was pointed out that, as the result of the evidence taken before the Royal Commission, which sat in connection with the HelensviUe-Hamilton mam highway, the Main Highways Board had approved a deviation which would carry the road lound the, Bombay hill and the Razorback, so avoiding several steep and awkward grades.
The routo favoured by the County Council, through Pukekohe would, in the opinion of the ratepayers' association, add considerably to trio distance between Auckland and Hamilton, and would not assist in the development of the county, as maintained by the County Council, but would only benefit the borough of Pukekohe, which was already served by the railway. The route approved by _ the Main Highways Board was the .most direct ?nd therefore served the object of a main highway. • A copy of a communication to thechairman of the Main Highways Board, embodying the ratepayers' association's views, was enclosed. The council decided to lend its support to the ratepayers* association in favour of the route which the Highways Board had approved.
