HITCH AT A CHRISTENING.
CONSTABLE INTERVENES. VICAR EQUAL TO OCCASION. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] WHAKATANE. Monday, A somewhat novel christening ceremony took place at Taneatua yesterday afternoon. There were two infants and a child of fourteen to be baptised at St. Matthew's Church, At the appointed hour the vicar of Whakatane, the Rev. W. W. Lambert, and the parents and friends arrived, but were met at the church grounds by the local constable who pointed out that under the infantile paralysis regulations children could not be permitted in churches or other places where people congregate. • The predicament was serious, as the parents had come' a considerable distance to have/ their children baptised, but the vicar proved equal to the occasion. He asked the adults present to remain in the church building while lie conducted the christening ceremony. His request was complied with and the children duly baptised put in the open.
