DROWNED IN THE SURF.
TRAGEDY NEAR SYDNEY. UNDERTOW PREVENTS RESCUE. A. and N.Z. SYDNEY. Feb. 9. A double surf tragedy occurred at Tuggerah. John William Willis, aged 45 years, and Alice Doyle, aged 26 years, were carried out to sea by the powerful'tindertow. Despite determined attempts at rescue by other bathers, both were drowned. The woman's body was brought ashore, and a fruitless effort made to restore animation. The man's body was washed up later.
