MOUNT EDEN BOROUGH.
ROADS AND DRAINAGE. PROGRESS OF THE WORKS. The Mount Eden Borough Council met last evening, the Mayor, Mr. J5. H. Potter, presiding. There were also present: Messrs. A, M. Bryden, L. Joll, J. M. Melville, R. McK. Morison, F. Morris, G. L. Taylor, W. G. J. Smith, W. WoollJy, D. C. Eraser. Rapid and satisfactory ' progress with the improvement of Mount Eden and Dominion Roads was reported by the borough engineer, Mr. J, Rogers. He reported that the concreting of the carriageway along Dominion Road had been completed the full width from the city boundary to Herbert Road and half the width from Herbert Road to Marsden Avenue. Mount Eden Road concreting had been completed the full width from the city boundary to Hillside Crescent and half the width of the carriageway from Hillside Crescent to Fairview Road was nearing completion. Estimates of the cost of alternative schemes in connection with the proposed improvement of Balmoral Road from the city boundary to the Mount Albert boundary were submitted by Mr. Rogers. He stated: (a) A concrete track 18ft. wide, with bitumen sprayed metal at the sides of the carriageway would involve a total approximate expenditure of £12,500; (b) necessary remetalling, together with a coating of bituminous composition, laid down hot, would necessitate an expenditure of £6000; and (c) formation and remetalling, together with bituminous sprayed metal applied in two coatings would involve a total cost of £3500. The report was referred to the Works Committee. Dealing with the progress of drainage works, the engineer reported that the construction of sewerage works in tho block bounded by View, Wynyard, Edenvale, and Esplanade Roads, and also the block lying on the north side of Wairiki Road from Tui Street to Mount Eden Road were making satisfactory progress. Survey and plans were in progress for sewerage of the block on the western side of Mount Eden Road from Shaddock Street to Abbott's Road, and he would be prepared to invite tenders for the proposed work at an early date. In connection with Nachrflson Park tho engineer reported that detailed drawings had been prepared, delineating the proposed formation of the children's plavjug area at the park, the levels of which would conform to the heights previously established. A small area of rock excavation would be necessary, but the bulk of the work would consist in filling up the lower portion. The matter was referred to the Parks Committee with power to «icfc. The tender submitted by Mr. J. Wi] liamson for the excavation and filling in of water main trenches in Shackleton Road was accepted, the amount being £155. 'Die engineer's estimate of the cost was £250. The amount of a second tender was £373. The council approved of the regulations in connection with the licensing of drivers of motor-vehicles other than those in tho heavy traffic class.
