ALLEGED GAMING HOUSE.
SEVEN MEN ARRESTED,, INQUIRIES ON TELEPHONE. A visit by Detectives Mcllugh and O'Brien to a carrier's office at 3, Theatre Lane, off "Victoria Street- West, about half-past eleven yesterday morning, led to the appearance of seven men in the Police Court, before Mr. J. W. Poynton, S.M., in the afternoon. A charge of keeping a common gaming house was preferred against Edward Williams, aged 43. Charges of being found .n a common gaming housu without lawful excuse were denied by Joseph Chfidwidi, aged 60; Thomas Johnston, ajred 34; Arthur Harvey Vemon, aged 34; Tema Pouwhare, aged 38; Kara Rama, aged 30; and John Joseph Nasey, aged 27. The accused were remanded until next Tuesday, bail for Williams being fixed at £IOO and for the others at £5 each. The police allege the premises were being used for the purpose of betting oil horse racing. The detectives, on arrival, took possession of the premises for a time, attending to messages by telephone and to personal callers, and executing a search of the office. The sequel was the arrest of Williams and the other six men.
