DELAYED BY A GALE.
MAHENO REACHES PORT, DAY LATE AT WELLINGTON. PASSENGERS' DISCOMFORT. (BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WELLINGTON. Wednesday. After a .tempestuous voyage from Sydney, the steamer Maheno arrived in the stream early this morning, being 24 hours overdue from Sydney. Ail the way across the Tasman Sea the vessel, which carried a large number of passengers, had to contend with a southerly gale and a high beam sea. On entering Cook Strait the gale increased in volume, and the weather became so thick that yesterday, when the Maheno was off the heads, it was impossible to see the entrance. The steamer stood out to sea and steamed slowly in the teeth of a howling gale and mountainous seas, with rain squalls until this morning, whein the conditions improved and the weather cleared. A quanttiy of water came aboard, and found its way into some of the, cabins, but no serious damage resulted. The passengers had an unenviable experience.
Other vessels which had been delayed by the gale yesterday were able to proceed on their way to-day.
