LAND AGENT SETTLEMENT. MINISTER'S CONDEMNATION. [BY TELEGRAPH. —SPECIAL REPORTER. ] WHAKATANE. Wednesday. The development of farm lands by land agents is apparently not advocated by tho Minister for Lands, the Hon. A. D McLeod. Speaking at a social function at Te Puke last evening he said he was of tho opinion that land should not bo developed by land agents, and in case." where it had been done it was one of the greatest bars to the Government development, policy. He had found men on land at £lO. £ls or £2O an acre which the department had parted with for the same number of shillings per acre, and there was very little development. Ho had to guard the taxpayers as well as the farmers, and he found that money which should have developed the land had been carried right, away from tho land. It would bo many many years before soma of those men would be. ablo to turn tho comer, no matter how well • they were treated by the State,,
