SWIMMING NOTES.

AUCKLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS. JUNIOR EVENTS POSTPONED. INDIVIDUAL PROSPECTS. The first of two Auckland championship .meetings •will take place next Tuesday evening at the Hobson Street baths, the second carnival being scheduled for next Thursday. The results of the races will influence the personnel of the team to represent Auckland at the New Zealand championships in Christchurch tie:;t month and swimmers will make their efforts to be selected. None df the junior championships will j be decided owing to the Health Department's restrictions in connection with the infantile paralysis .epidemic. They will be held at a later date, if possible. Unless the prohibition of children attending public gatherings is raised before February 21, the opening date of the Dominion championship meeting, no races for juniors will figure on the programme. On Tuesday evening the championships to he decided are the men's JGO yards and 140 yards, and 220 yards breast stroke, ladies* 230 yards, intermediate girls' 100 yards and intermediate boys' 230 yards. Hundred Yards Contest. The 100 yards championship promises to ho an exceptionally close race, and it is quite feasible that the unexpected may happea, as it has previously. In all probability the entries will necessitate two heats, unless the quarter-mile aspirants elect to conserve their energy for that event-, but in any case some will be competing in both. On recent performances Adamson should win. He covered the distance in 60 i-5s at the Shelly Beach baths last Saturday, time which has act been equalled in New Zealand this season. Enwright, who has not competed in many sprints, lately, is in good form, avd with the experience gained in many similar tests will be hard to beat. The, title-holder, W. I'. Smith, who won last year in 61s, is rapidly regaining his pace "of former days, and has hopes of repeating his surprise victory of 1924, when he led throughout to beat Enwright by a yard, with Fairgray third, a similar distance away. Fairgray always swims • a good 100 yards, ami will finish among ' the leaders, while other entrants are also swimming at their best. The 100 yards championship will be one of the most exciting ever held in Auckland. Competitors in Other Events. In the quarter-mile Gunnold will be on hand to defend'his title against' 1 Enwright, Peibani, Bradley and others. Last year he- won from "Enwright, with Bradley third, in 5m 55 2-ss. Enwright has registered the best time, 5m 555, for the distance so far. and he 'k therefore expected to be the champion's sternest rival, although the other two ; swimmers men-tios.-'d will have to be considered. But, for the unfortunate accident that betel the breasi-iiroke champion, A. J. Morris, last week, the issue of the 220 yards breast-stroke race would have been certain. This event will probably bow result in a good straggle between tha youths, Piddoek and- Dickenson, and the veterans, Fitzwihiani and Clark. Lady swimmers have decreased in numbers locally, and it appears only two, Misses Stockley and Page, will wike part in the ■ 220 ■ yards championship. ' ■ Nevertheless, a close race is assured, as Miss Page, who will be making her first appearance'in the open class, is expected to make a bold bid for the title, which Miss Stockley now holds. Intermediate Boys and Girls. The intermediate races will provide the yoanger swimmers with an opportunity of proving their worth. Of the girls Misses J. Belf, L. Contts, E. Grant and M. Far-q-ahar have all performed creditably this season. W. Cameron and Johnson, who fought oat a very close finish for second pla.ee in the last 220 yards boys' championship, will meet again, Bridson, the holder of the junior titles, and Kudling are other competitors. t Oiher • events, induding the 220 yards men's, 150 yards back-stroke and 100 varus ladies' championships are set down for decision next Thursday. Tli>3 440 yards ladies' championship will be decided' at the Grammar . Club's gala on February 30, and the Waitemata C'" u will hold a" meeting on February 16. Trophy orders won at the Auckland summer "carnival sports in 1923 are nowavailable from the cen-tre secretary, Mr. F. J. Boggs. . The 220 vards Wellington championship was won last Saturday by C. Claridge from J, Cameron, , second, and E. Patterson, third, in 2m 43 2-ss.
