NOTES FROM THE SOUTH.

THE MANAWATU MEETING.

j [by telegraph.—own correspondent."! WELLINGTON,. S&turda;?. ' j In Wellington Sunart is a good favourite I for the Manawatu Cup. It is generally ieckoned that the handicapper li£is given tho top-weight a very fair chance and as the field is a weak one. ho will only hs. e to strip well to be made a warm favour;te on the machine. Trentham has two representative!! in the Manawatu Plate—Salamis and The Tank--and it is on the cards that both of them will go well. The strongest opposition may come from Sanctuary and Newbury King. Last Crust, who always races well on the Awapuni track, is well fancied for the chief sprint event on the opening day of the Manawatu meeting; and though he will not be favourite, it seems that- he will be fairly well backed on the totalisator. He will have the advantage of a light weight; but there are some useful sprinters cnguged and the raco looks very open. It is believed that the difficulty respecting a date- for the Wellington Autumn Meeting hai been overcome and that the meeting will take place on March 27 and i 23. 4
