LAWN TENNIS MATCHES.

THE INTER-CLUB CONTESTS. RESULTS OF SATURDAY'S PLAY. The inter-club matches under the control of the Auckland Tennis Association were continued on Saturday. The various courts were in good order, but a high south-west-erly wind militated against accurate driving. The B grade contest at Stanley Street, Mount Albert v. Devonpotf, resulted in a win for the former by eight games to five. In the C grade, Aratonga A beat Grammar at Stanley Street by nine games to three; Y.M.C.A. beat Devonport. at Devonport, by nine games to three; and Aratonga B beat Bawhiti, at Aratonga, by eight games to five. THE INVITATION DOUBLES. The final of the men's invitation doubles match, which was to have been played at Stanley Street on Saturday, was postponed at the last moment owing: to the indisposition of one of the contestants. CHAMPIONSHIP COMPETITORS. Several visitors have arrived from the South to participate in the New Zealand tennis championsnip tournament, and were practising at the local club courts on Saturday. Misses Spiers and Ferrier. of Christcb/'rch, were at the Eemuera courts. The foi>aer, being; the holder of the ladies' title, attracted much attention, and delighted the criiics with her finished display of all-round shots. Miss Ferrier,, though not so strong a player as the champion, combined well with ber. and some interesting doubles were played against the local players. Miss Lloyd, of Sydney, partnered with Miss Knight, of Auckland, practised against V. R. and A. C. Johns, and obtained useful practice. AUCKLAND HANDICAP TOURNEY. The closing of entries for the Auckland handicap tournament, to be played during the New Year holidays, has been postponed until Wednesday, in order to enable visiting players to enter on their arrival at Auckland. __________________
