MUST KNOW THE LAW.
ENGLISHMAN'S " PRIVILEGE." "1 can assure you that the statutes of this country would cover the whole of the walls of this Court. Every child who is born into this world is supposed to know them by heart," said a magistrate at the Lambeth Police Court, recently. He was speaking to a man, who was charged with stealing by finding a sponge worth 6s 9d. The accused said lie was unaware of the law on the point, and was discharged. The magistrate said it could not be too widely known that, if a man found anything in the street, he must take reasonable steps t<> find the owner. "One of the privileges of an Englishman is that ho has to know the law. Very few lawyers do," added the magistrate.
