AMATEUR ATHLETICS.
STATUS OF PROFESSIONALS, BARRED AS COMMITTEEMEN. [by telegraph.own CORRESPONDENT. J HAMILTON. Friday. The Hamilton Amatour Athletic Club, at a special meeting last evening, discussed the right of a professional to serve as a committeeman on an amateur body. Mr. 0. S. Ellis, the chairman, pointed out that anyone who had taken part or run as a professional was not eligible for appointment to other committees. The club wished to arouse enthusiasm in amateur sport, and put down any illfeeling. The New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association would not allow affiliation unless the committee was cloared of professionals. It was essential that tho two professionals, Shirtcliffe and McGeehan, who were members of tho committee, should put in their resignation, An effort would be made to have them both reinstated as amateurs. Mr. Shirtcliffe, who was present at tho meeting, tonderod his resignation, which was accepted with regret.
