GIRLS' HOSTEL WANTED.

WHANGAREI HIGH SCHOOL. THE PRINCIPAL URGENT. [B\' TELEGBAFU.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WHANG ABEI. Friday. In his address at the prize-giving function at the Whangarei High School yesterday, the principal, Mr. A. B. Charters, referred to the need for a girls' hostel. The rapid increase in the roll number of boarders had already led to temporary accommodation being made for the boys, pending the completion by next September of the new boys' high school, recently started, but the position regarding boarding houses for the girls was nearly as difficult. Mr. Charters urged an appeal to the Minister for help. There were 34 girls boarding in the town,. It would lie much better to have them concentrated under one roof, in charge of a housemistress. It was pointed out that the Whangarei High School is the only purely secondary school north of Auckland, and that there are only three or four district high schools. As a result of the lack of accommodation, many pupils from the North are compelled to go to Auckland to private schools. At present, in the North, with its population of over 4000, there is provision for only 80 boarders, an boys. Air. Charters declared that when the large area of the North Auckland Peninsula, the scattered population, and the means of communication were considered, it was only just that in Whangarei some provision should be made by the authorities for secondary education for country girls, if only from the point of view of widening their outlook.
