SLOW AT LEARNING.

FOURTH FORM SCHOOLBOYS.

A HEADMASTER'S COMMENT.

A lowering in the calibre of the boys who entered the secondary schools last year is reported by Mr. F. W. Gamble, headmaster of the Mount Albert Grammar School, in the course of his annual report. The low standard of work in tho fourth forms of the school this year was due partly to the bad start inado in staffing in 1923, but mostly it is due to tho pooe, average calibre of the boys themselves. Tho yield of our primary tchools appears to vary as the harvests ' of the field, and, while the pupils entered in 1922 and 1924 proved satisfactory, those of 1923 were noticeably inferior. It is true that 65 of them have already satisfied requirements for senior free places, arid a few moro may succeed in the intermediate examination, but the majority of them have learned very slowly and pli.ced heavy demands upon the skill and patience of their masters.
