ENGLISH CRICKETERS.
FIRST TEST MATCH TO-DAY.
PRELIMINARY DISCUSSIONS. Australian aud N.Z. Cuble Association (Reed. 5.5 p.m.) SYDNEY. Dec. IS
The general opinion concerning the English cricket eleven to plav in the first test match at Sydney to-morrow is that Gilligan made a mistake in dropping Douglas, who is regarded as the gieatest fighter England possesses. Seveial old international players express surprise at his omission, ar.d state that his dangeious bowling with a new ball should not have been overlooked.
The Englishmen are reticent. One said, "It is all in the luck of the game. We have seventeen players, and cannot all expect to play in the test matches."
Sandham, who leplaces Douglas, figured only in one previous test match against Australia. He headed the English batting averages last ye; r, and is sound and solid. He should be an excellent test match batsman.
The weather is. unsettled, and the wicket will probably favour the batsmen. Much will depend on who wins the toss.
