MEAT EXPORT TRADE.
DEMAND FROM EUROPE.
THE ARGENTINE'S LARGE SHARE.
[bt telegraph.—own correspondent.] WELLINGTON, Wednesday.
A review of the meat industry at home and abroad was given by the chairman of the Gear Meat Company, Mr- ■ H. Mil ward, at the annual meeting -of shareholders this evening. Last season opened with the keenest competition from all sources, and high prices were paid for sheep and lambs, said the chairman. After the early shipments it Was found difficult to do "business on c.i.f. terms at remunerative rates, and from January onwards values fell considerably, and forward business was out of the question. Lower prices, however, resulted in increased competition, stocks became less ened, and as a result satisfactory prices later eventuated. Tho company s strong financial position enabled it to nold a great part of its consignments over the unfavourable period, and thereby to ob tain full ' advantage of tho improving situation. ( "Conditions on tho Continent. -O Europe have recently been more stable, he continued, "and as a consequence several shipments of second-quality ee Fiave been made to various points, an there is a prospect of a continuance. J os of tho business was done with Sout America, and the enormous expansion ot Argentine exports to meet this deman has astonished even those well acquainte with the trade, and is eloquent evidence of the resources of that country.
