BAY OF PLENTY MEAT.
THE WHAKATANE WORKS.
COMBINED RATEPAYERS' SCHEME.
[BT TXLEGF.A.PH.--OWN CORRESPONDENT.
TAURANGA, Friday.
The Tauranga County Council to-day considered a letter from the Pongakawa branch of the Farmers' Union in regard to the proposal that the ratepayers of the Bay of Plenty should acquire the East Coast freezing works, notifying that a. resolution had been carried by the branch, without a single dissentient, as follows: —''That, in the opinion of this branch of tho Farmers' Union, the benefits to be derived from the ratepayers taking over the freezing works will not warrant the cost, and protests against a poll being held on the subject,"
The council decided to reply that the representations of the branch would be noted when the question finally came before the council for decision.
It was stated that the representatives of the various local bodies would meet at Whakatane on December 20 to consider the proposals for the acquisition of the works.
Mr. W. F. Mundt urged that the western portion of the Tauranga Countyshould come into tho scheme, but this was opposed by Mr. F. Meniman, who considered it would be hotter to leave that area out.
Tho council had already appointed the chairman, Mr. 11. King, and Messrs, W. F. Mundt and A. B. Morton as delegates. It was decided to add the names of Messrs. F. Merriman, C Lally and L. G. Harris.
