INTERNATIONAL RACING.

NOT FAVOURED IN ENGLAND.

Tho efforts being made iu America to encourage international contests in horse-racing within its borders will no doubt be marked with a vigour characteristic of the United States. Judging from comments in England, it may be very much doubted if the matter will bo regarded with enthusiasm in tho home country. " The Special Commissioner" of the Sportsman penned the following: — "The doleful adventures of Epinard in the U.S.A. should put a final stop to the promotion of so-called international ' sports so far as horse-racing is concerned. Tho Papyrus episode was bad enough, but he had to run against one opponent only; and when the condition of the track on the day of tho race proved to be hopeless for onv horso with ordinary plates, Basil Jarvis decided 1o ' take a licking' rather than risk having the colt shod with toe-clips and calkins. Consequently Papyrus came back to England nut much the worse for his ordeal, though It took him a long time to regain his best form. Ho did., in fact, regain it, en he clearly showed in tho Jockey Club Stakes, and no harm has been done—in fact, it is a distinct credential that ho emerged from such an enterprise unscathed Epinard. with his more intimate U.S.A. connections and iiu Americuu trainer, would, it was thought, hnvo much better chauces of victorv than Papyrus had. In the event it ha.s proved far otherwise, for those connccled with Epinard have by some inconceivable folly permitted him in each of the three races to take on several opponents, one or other of which, according to American papers' own reports. ' took car© of him' on each occasion, and now, in yet. another race, it seems ho has been lamed, and thus, it may be, incapacitated from ever retrievinc his reputation as Papyrus has done. Surely, if any. one wishes to try his horses out internationally, it is far better to send them to Emrland and run for the Derhv or Oaks, or at Ascot- -or elsewhere—without any needless ' booming' or working up big gatemoney as for a fiiove tight/'
