An Order-in-Council notifies tho personnel of a board set up to ;be known as the Maori Purposes Fund Control Board under section 3 of the Native "washing-up" Act, which allocates £90,000 . . from accumulated native moneys for the education of Maoris, ethnological research and other purposes for the welfare of the natives. The regulations now issued are the outcome of conferences, held during last Bessiou between the Minister for Native Affairs, the Hon. J. G. Coates, and the' Maori members of Parliament for the improvement 'of ■ the social condition of the Maoris generally.

r Jhe purposes of the fund shall be (a) tho education, physical, mental, technical and social, of the natives; (b) the founding of scholarships and ' exhibitions for natives, and the payment of such allowances as may be deemed expedient in connection therewith; (c) contribut ions to' , the Maori secondary schools aid fundj (d) contributions tp the Maori ethnological research fund; (e) support of the Polynesian Society of New Zealand and, any other society which has iV>r its object the study and investigation 'of • matters concerning tho Maori ind cognate race of tho South Pacific Ocean; (f). such other purposes as the Native Minister may, on the recommendation of the board, from time to time .appoint. Tho board will comprise tho following : —The Minister of Native Affairs, the Hon.. J. G. Coates (chairman); the Under-Secretary of Native .Affairs; the chief Native Land Court Judge, Judge R. ; N. |Ton(s (deputy-chairman) ; the director, of e lucation, Mr. J. Caughley; the members of tho Houso of Representatives representing the Maori race, the Hon. Sir Maui Pomsre, the Hon. A. G. Ngata, Mr. H. W. Ur.u and Mr. Tau Henare; Mr. K. S. Williams, M.P. (Bay t>f Plenty) ; Dr. P. H. Buck, Auckland; and the Rev. P. A. Bennett, Hastings.
