PONSONBY CARNIVAL.
BOYS' BAND CAMPAIGN.
GAIETY AT THE THREE LAMPS.
Ponsonby was en fete last evening when a queen carnival campaign in aid of the Ponsonby Boys' Brass Band was launched. From early in the evening until a late hour Ponsonby Road, in the vicinity of the Three Lamps, presented an animated scene. Shops were gaily decorated, and electric illuminations added to the general effectiveness of the spectacle.
Thousands of people, young and old, were present. The attractions included side-shows and other features. The Ponsonby Boys' Band rendered enjoyable musical items. Prize packets were freely vended and votes solicited for the four queens taking part in the competition. All these appeals met with ready and generous response, and the band's funds were augmented by somo hundreds of pounds. Another fete will be held next Friday evening at Ponsonby, while a floral fete and a Venetian carnival at Shellv Beach after the Christinas holidays will bring the campaign to a close. It is hoped to raise the sum of £3000 by that time. This sum will bo used '.n aid of the band and also to make free tuition in music available in the Ponsonby district. There are at present 70 boys" in the band, but sufficient instruments are not available. A bandroom for practising purposes is also needed.
