RAILWAY TRUCKS SCARCE.
HINDRANCE TO SHIPPING.
PREPARING' FOR THE RACES.
A dearth of railway trucks., in Auckland is causing considerable inconvenience to shipping companies in the handling of cargo. Shipping in the port at present is very heavy and the position in regard to trucks is made more acute by the presence of steamers with loose cargoes.
Representatives of the companies, in emphasising the difficulty they are having in despatching vessels to schedule time, consider the Railway Department should endeavour to cope with the situation instead of fitting out trucks as passenger carriages for race traffic. The shortage was attributed by a railway official to the abnormal shipments of cargo arriving, which were not expected at this time of tho year. The department was doing its best to relieve the situation, the supply of trucks in normal times being equal to the demand. It was true a certain number of trucks were being 7 used to cater for racegoers and excursions.
