The vessel sails on her return to bydney to-morrow morning. TUTANEKAI AT NIUE ISLAND. The Government steamer Tutanekai. which sai.ed from Auckland at G. 15 p.m. on December 1, arrived at Niue Island: on Saturday. After discharging and loading the vessel will return to Auckland. KAWATIRI AT NAPIER. With a caitro of timber from Newcastle and Port Stephens the Kawatiri arrived at Napier yesterday. The Union Company's trans-Pacific steamer Waiotapu arrived at Wellington en Tuesday moraine with a full cargo of coal from Newcastle. After discharge the vesel proceeds to Pacific Coast ports via Fanning Island to load for New Zealand and Australia. RANGITOTO ARRIVED. Mr. G. T. Niccol's excursion steamer, Kangitoto arrived from England early yesterday morning and herthed at the Queen's Wharf. The vessel sailed from Southampton on September 11 and came to Auckland via Malta, Port Said, Aden, Colombo, Sourabaya and Sydney. MAHANA EXPECTED TO-DAY. L. D. Nathan and Company, Ltd., advise that the Shaw, Savill and Albion Line steamer Mahana was to leave Gisborne last night for Auckland where she is due this evening. The vessel will complete loading at this port and she is to be despatched for London, via Montevideo and Teneriffe, on December 19.

RUAHINE DUE ON SATURDAY. The New Zealand Shipping Company's liner Ruahine. en route from London and Southampton with passengers, mails and cargo for New Zealand, has reported by wireless that ahe will arrive at Wellington at 7 a.m. on Saturday. The passengers will disembark at Wellington and the cargo will be discharged at Wellington and Lyttelton. Includsd among the passengers is Sir Charlei! Fergusson, the new Governor-Gen-eral of New Zealand. THE PORT CAMPBELL. To complete loading at Auckland for New York, Boston and London, the Commonwealth and Dominion Line steamer Port Cam [-cell, is expected to leave Napier for this port to-night. The vessel is due here on Saturday morning and Heather, Roberton, Ltd . the local :gents, expect to despatch her at daybreak on Wednesday for New York. THE CITY OF EDINBURGH.

The Sydney Marine Underwriters' Association has reo-iived a cablegram advising that the steamer City of Edinburgh has been in collision with a. barge at New York. The vessel, apparently, was not seriously damaged, for she subsequently proceeded on her voyage. City of Edinburgh is bound from New York to Auckland. Wellington, Lyttelton, Dunedin and Bluff with general cargo. She is, due at this port about December 22.

CARGO /FROM PACIFIC COAST. The Union Company advises that the chartered steamer Sheaf Mount arrived at San Francisco at 3 p.m. on Friday from Vancouver to complete loading Pacific Coast cargo for New Zealand. The vessel is to clear San Francisco this week and is due at Auckland about the end of December. The company's chartered steamer Trelyon arrived at San Francisco from Vancouver on Friday to complete loading. She is to sail this week for Auckland, Melbourne, Sydney and Newcastle. THE TYMERIC. Heather, Roberton, Ltd., have received advice that the Commonwealth and Dominion Line's chartered &teamer 'lymerio cleared Panama on December 3. The vessel is en route from New York with a cargo of case oil and general 'merchandise for dischargo at Auckland, Napier, Wellington. Lyttelton and Dunedin. She is due at this port about December 27. THE NEW DIRECT SERVICE. The local office of the Canadian Merchant Marine has received cabled advice that four steamers will mnintain the new direct service between. Canada and New Zealand ports. They are the Canadian Challenger, Canadian Conqueror, Canadian Constructor, and the Canadian Cruiser. The new service' which will be a monthly one, will be inaugurated by the Canadian Challenger, leaving Montreal on January 21. Of the four steamers mentioned, the Challenger, Constructor and Cruiser are oil-burning vessels, while the Conqueror burns coal fuel. The Challenger and Conqueror each carry about 10,000 tons of cargo, and the Constructor and Cruiser about 11,000 tons.

MOTOR-SHIP BUILDING. The Motor Ship states that motor vessels of nearly 1,000.000 tons gross are now being j built. In tho September quarter more motor- ' ships than steamers were commenced, and during the last 18 months motor-ships under construction have increased threefold, while steamers have decreased by nearly 50 per cent. A year ago motor-ships represented 24 per cent, of the steam tonnage on the stocks. To-day it is 58 per cent. For the first time in history there is a larger motor than steam tonnage being built in Continental yard*., and in countries other than Britain the'percentage of motor to steam tonnage* under construction has increased from 23.5 to 102 within p, year. It is significant that Germans, in, building up her now mercantile marine, iii adopting the oil engine almost exclusively. German steam tonnage under construction is less than 10 per cent, of British, but the motor tonnage is over 70 per cent. _____
