ASIATICS IN NATAL.
EFFECT OF COMPETITION.
WHITE PEOPLE LEAVING.
Asiatic competition is said to be the reason for a number of business men and skilled artisans leaving Natal. It is stated to be a fact that before any cosinicrciiil traveller representing a white firm can do any business in the small towns throughout the colony where. Indian traders have practically ousted the white traders, they have to pay an amount assessed according to the standard of the firm they represent. Then they are given a receipt and allowed to carry on. It is stated that Asiatics are selling cigarettes at actual cost price just to obtain the empty cases to sell to a compatriot for fruit export. Business men are protesting that if they have to appear at Court as defendants, Indian clerks are sometimes sent by wtnte firms to act as prosecutors. It is a common sight to see an Indian clerk dictating to a white girl typiste.
