COLOURED SEAMAN'S WIDOW.
SEQUEL TO STABBING AFFRAY.

'! he secretary of the National Seamen's Union at, Swansea is trying to obtain £600 compensation for (lie widow and two children of John Jacob, the coloured seaman who was the victim of the recent stabbing affray at Newcastle, New South Wales.
When the steamer Troworlas was bound from Ocean Island on October 7, a fireman. John Jacob, a West African, was alleged to have been stabbed to death on the forecastle deck by a member of the Indian crew, Medi Doran. The latter was immediately placed in irons. He was handed over to the police on the arrival of the ship at Newcastle. Doran was later charged with murder. Ho now stands, committed for trial on that charge. Hie two men had been working together as greaser and fireman respectively .since the beginning of the voyage. Owing to Doran's bad temper there had been 'frequent quarrels. Jacob was leaning over rhe dock rails, when Doran is alleged to have attacked him with a knife. Before he had time to grapple with his assailant. Jjtcob was stabbed. r I he tack was so sudden that the other members of the crew were not able to intervene.
