ELECTRICITY CHARGES.

The actual effect of the new scale of charges for domestic supply adopted by the Auckland Power Board will no doubt be determined I by individual consumers by its experimental application to old accounts. It is, however, fairly obvious that for the great majority it represents a substantial concession. All consumers of more than 25 units in six weeks—a very moderate allowance—will gain by the new tariff in the winter months, and there will be a further saving in the summer, as against the present charges, on all consumption over 50 units. Those whose bills fall below these minima will share the general satisfaction at the abolition of meter rent. The only reservation that may be made by consumers is that unless care, is taken to preserve the minimum interval of six weeks between meterreadings, the full advantage of the new scale will not be obtained. The board's purpose in making this revision is admirable. On the basis of present consumption, the new tariff involves a substantial sacrifice of revenue, but relying on the general experience of electricity development it is anticipated that this loss will be quickly restored as the cheapness of supply encourages the use of electricity for domestic purposes. In addition to the inducement of lower rates, the board is making electricity more attractive by undertaking to deliver it through one meter for all domestic uses, an arrangement that implies the abolition of all inquisitorial regulations. At present, the domestic demand is almost wholly for lighting, and since this overlaps the industrial peak load, it is sound policy to encourage the use of power for other purposes spread over the whole day. In serving the convenience of the public, the board is also developing its business on thoroughly progressive lines. ~
