NEW ZEALAND CANDIDATES.

RUN OF ILL-LUCK.

[FROM our OWN correspondent. ] LONDON. Nov. 4.

New Zealand is generally represented in some manner in the English elections, but this time candidates who have a New Zealand connection have been peculiarly unfortunate. Dr. W. A. Chappie, formerly M.P. for Tuapaka, who has represented Dumfries in the Liberal interests during the last two Parliament, was on this occasion defeated by the Unionist candidate, Brigadier-General J. Chartens. Dr. Chappie only arrived back from South Africa tho day before the election and this may have had something to do with his defeat. The Unionist candidate, however, polled 12,718 votes to Dr. Chappie's 8472. It was a three-cor-nered contest in which a woman, Mrs. A. Dollan, who stood for Labour succeeded in getting 6342 votes. Brigadier-General Charteris is the son of the late Professor Chartei'is, of Glasgow University. He has seen service with the Royal Engineers .in India, and was head of the Intelligence Department in France. For tho second time, Mr. F. M. B. Fisher, formerly M.P. for Wellington "Central, stood , for Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and was only defeated by a narrow majority by the Labour candidate, Mr. C. P. Trevelyan, who was President of the Board of Education in the Labour Government. Li. <^ _year Mr. Trevelyan beat Mr. Fisher by 1187 votes; this year by 896. The successful Labour candidate is tho eldest son of Sir George Otto Trevelyan, Bart., and was originally a Liberal member.

Six- Edward Grigg, who married Lord and Lady Islington's only daughter, had a hard fight against Mr. A. Duff Cooper. The latter has a vicarious fame in that lie married Lady Diana Manners. Lady Diana has been helping m the elections. Sir Edward Grigg was defeated by Mr. Duff Cooper by about 800 votes, but they both are elected to the constituency, Oldham returning two members. Two Labour candidates were soundly defeated. Mr. A. E. Hillary, who has but the, slightest connection" with New Zealand in that lie lived there for one year in 1879, is defeated at. Harwich. He had a Liberal majority last year of 1917. This vear the Unionist candidate has beaten blVn by 2315 votes. Mr. P. A. Harris, son of Mr. Wolf Harris, has again been elected as Liberal representative for Bethnal Green. Mrs. H. T. Whiteley, who is a New Zealander, entered enthusiastically into fho election campaign on behalf of her husband, who stood as the Liberal member for South-east Leeds. Mrs.' Whiteley is the youngest daughter of Mr- Thomas Johnstone, of Glenwark, Waipari. Her husband, Lord Marchamley's son, went out to New Zealand some years ago to study the conditions over there. As Mrs. Whiteley has told the paragraphers: " He turned up on my father's estate to find his feet, so to speakand found me." Mr. Whiteley, however, was defeated by Sir Henry" Slesser, K.C., who was knighted on becoming Solicitor-General in the Labour Government.

Major N. H. Mollor is another defeated Socialist, who spcjit .some time in New Zealand. After leaving the army ho was called to the Bar and went out, to the Dominion to practise his profession. He does not seem to have found New Zealand to his tasto and returned to this country. He is r, moderate shade of Socialist, hut in his effort at Chelmsford he succeeded in polling only 2904 votes against Sir H. Curt Bennett's 15,875. Sir Thomas Insk p. K.C-, who is returned as a Conservative for Bristol Central, married Lady Augusta Orr-Ewing, the widow of the late Mi-. C. Orr-Ewing, and the eldest daughter of the late Earl of Glasgow, formerly Governor of New Zealand.
