MOTOR - CYCLE RACES.

OTAHUHU CLUB'S MEETING, j COLEMAN-S TRIPLE WIN. The second annual race meeting of the Otabuhu Motor-Cyole Club was held on .the ! Avondale racecourse on Saturday afternoon, about 3000 spectators being present. The track, although somewhat rough, was im- ' proved from last year, and was capable of holding good speed. ' - ] The chief attraction was Percy Coleman, ' New Zealand's champion rider, who gave & peerless exhibition in spite of his recent indisposition. Shakespear showed much improvement, and thoroughly deserved his win. Of the light-weights, Goodwin was outatand- •. ; • ing, his machine being by. far the fastest in this class. Whitehead also winning his race on the same machine. Coleman took the majority of the wins, and with his team mate, Shakespear, secured half the ' programme for the Harley-Davidson camp. The balance of the events went to A.J.S. riders, with the exception of the five-mile Consolation, where Peace (Douglas) secured the decision from Nash (A.J.S.). by half a wheel. The only other machine worthy of mention was Herbert's Norton, but per- I sißtent bad luck spoiled its chances. The Indian Agency was'not. represented. L ] Mr. G. Henning acted as Judge, being associated with Mr. Speight, timekeeper, and Mr. R. E. Champtaloup, lap recorder. Mr. ! J. Kay and Mr. J. Glanville acted as handi- :i capper and starter respectively. The limit men got well away, but- were overhauled after three laps by Nash and Her-.. Bert, with Shakespear eating up the lead. Coleman was a long way back but, completing his second lap in 525. he brought applause from the stands. When in a good position in the fifth lap, Shakespear"s -Sack tyre blew out, leaving Herbert to pump into-front place in the sixth lap,-with a string of 2J's close behind. Coleman was still flying round and closing rapidly. From this on the end was clear, and l Coleman passed the judge's box with 150 yards to spare, his last lap slowing down to 595. Time, 9m 82s. Norris took the lead, and won by the length of tiie straight. . Goodwin and Herbert fought a duel, the former lapping in 665. an* just securing fourth place. Time. 7m 575. President's Handicap (open), 6 laps.—O. Shakespear (7 Harley-Davidson), 20s, 1; C. Walker <2| A.J.S.). 555, 2: V. Peace (21 Douglas), 555, 3. Also started: P. Walker quickly took the lead, and maintained the position, a good deal-of shifting about taking place with the other light* weights. After the third lap Shakespear went ahead, and won comfortably. Coleman put in a great spurt in the last lap, and just failed to catch the second and third men. His fastest lap was 595. Time, 6m 2b. ONLY TWO SURVIVORS. Otahuhu Handicap, 10 laps.—P. Coleman, 7 Harley-Davidson. scr. 1: O. Shakespear. 7 Harley-Davidson, 80s, 2. Also started: Herbert (81 Norton). 80s: Whitehead (2$ A.J.S.), 80s. Herbert made a good Btart. and got well away, and had completed a lap before Coleman started. Whitehead smiled in the third lap. but escaped injury. His front wheel ran into a ruck on the track, and he lest control. Coleman set off at a tremendous pace, lapping in 555. He caught Shakespear in the fifth lap. and. shortly afterwards overhauled Herbert, who was riding well, and looked, certain for second money. With only a lap to go. he encountered trouble, and had to retire, leaving Shakespear to finish second, almost a lap behind Coleman, who had eased up to 60sper lap. Time. 11m 49 2-ss. Peace was closing up.. taking the lead at the end of the sixth lap. | Goodwin, who was lapping his best in 645. was not to be denied, and forging ahead he gained on the corners and the long back stretch to win by 150 yards. Peace being 50 yards ahead of Walker. Time, 9m 29 3-ss. A SPLENDID RECOVERY. Auckland Handicap (open), 10 laps.—-P. Coleman, 7 Harley-Davidson, scr, 1.; S. Whitehead, 21 A.J.S.. 955. 2; J. Krevich, 7 Harley-Davidson, 160s. 3. Also started: Herbert (31 Xorton), 130s. Out of 21 entries ' only four started. Coleman appeared to be ' handicapped out of the event. Kreyich having completed two laps before the flier started. The field gradually overhauled Krevich, bad luck causing, Herbert to retire in the sixth lap, with a burst tyre. Coleman was lappin- consistently m 54s and 555, and in the eighth lap took the lead, thereafter slowing considerably. Just on the finish his back wheel skidded broadside on the track, but with splendid skill he straightened up to finish half a lap ahead of Whitehe-id, who had an easy victory over Krovu-h.
