MEETING OF THE COUNCIL.
[BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] OTOROHANGA. Saturday. The Otorohanga County Council met this week, Mr. F. Potts in the chair.
It was decided to withdraw the guarantee given by the council in connection with the Ngaroma telephone. It was agreed to raise £900 at 6 per cent, for five years, and to hypothecate the debentures, the Government subsidising this amount £2 for' £1, in order that a bridge might be erected across the Waipa River at Toa's crossing.
A deputation waited upon the council, urging the further development of the rabbit-netting scheme, and the council gave this its sympathetic consideration, recognising that it had been of great benefit to settlers.
A further deputation asked for the early metalling of Barber's Road. It was pointed out that the council could not make a start until plans and specifications had been approved by the department, but the county engineer promised to submit these at once. Meanwhile tenders will be called in order that the work may be proceeded with as soon as possible. The clerk was authorised to raise a loan of £1500 for the Upper Mangawhero drainage works. A report by the clerk stated that the rates were coming in well. The receipts were £1800 better than last year. The various ridings stood in credit as follows: Honikiwi, £962 4s 3d; Mangawhero, £804 9s 3d; Te Rauamoa, £455 19s lid; Waipa, £831 7s 4d. The Wharepapa Riding stood in debit £575 2s 7d.
_ The engineer reported that the metalling contract on the Main South Road will be completed in a few days' time, giving a through imetalled surface going north. The sum of £1500 is to be spent in repairing'the Honikiwi Road, between the Te Raumauku and Tapuae Roads, as soon as authority is received, and the construction of a concrete culvert to replace the old wooden bridge is in hand. This road gives access to the Kawhia Harbour from Otorohanga, the distance to the port on the south side being only 26 miles. The metalling of the Puketawai Road, from the Honikiwi Road junction to 6 chains beyond the school, is to be taken in hand on receipt of authority.
