TROUT AT TAUPO.

YOUNG FISH VERY PLENTIFUL

SEASON'S GOOD < PROSPECTS.

A keen fisherman who has just returned to Napier after a trip to Taupo states that never before were so many young fish seen or caught, and that their numbers guarantee good sport for many years to come. " During the time I was at Taupo," he said, " the weather conditions were unfavourable; the lake was much higher than it has been for many years and the winds were cold and varying all day and every, day. The fish are undoubtedly numerous. They were, however, coming very short, and the fish hooked averaged only one for every six or seven risen. On the first morning there were 13 rises before a fish was hooked, and on another day 15 rises before one was landed.

" The best fish seen was caught on a fly and weighed lljlb. It was a really well-, conditioned jack which hardly could have 'spawned last year. Fish which had done so showed very good recovery and by Christmas should be in prime condition. Even so, only two or three fish approached the condition of old-time slabs, and even they were of good colour. " The mosu pleasing feature was tfyat small fish of from 21b. to 41b., and in perfect condition, appeared to be very numerous on both shores of the lake. They seemed to be travelling in shoals and are probably young fish up from the Waikato. Many good fish at the mouth of the Waikato were caught travelling and some were in perfect condition. In all, 19 fish were caught one morning before seven o'clock, and subsequently several good fish were landed on the fly. " There were good numbers of. fish caught all the way down to Cherry Island, and eight fish of were caught on small fly from the shore at Ricket's farm in bright sunlight between two o'clock and four one afternoon. They were all beautiful little fish, pink and fat."
