The C.J.C. had every reason to bo pleased with the conditions ruling' for tho opening day of the Spring Meeting. The course was m good order, looking at its best after the recent rain, while it had dried up, and provided excellent going. The fields were largo and the racing wus particularly exciting, head and neck finishes being ouitfe tj te usual thing. It was u groat try-out for the n«jw judge, Mr. A. Dickson, and his assistant. also, for the new judge's; bo*. It is situated on roof of the stewards' ?tand thirty feet hu'n. and 175 feet, back from tho rail* and it provides a really good view of tna an ion, the official being further assisted by a light wire stretched in nn unbroken lino Ironi the judge's box to the fur side of the wurs*. The. racing opened with the Spring Hurdle 1 Handicap, ,or . whifh Red Kriss was scratched, leaving 10 starters. Santiago, L'' r aeru<* and Le <"orte vorp fimc'ed in that order, Cerberus, Frisco Mail nnd Kerry Star led lor half a, nulo, wheu BelUopk replaced i

Kerry Star. Going along the back, Passin Through moved up. and he joined Cerberui in the lead five furlongs from home. Cer berus was beaten in the entrance to th< straight. Le Forte took second place at tin last hurdle, but Passin' Through beat bin home by three lengths. Santiago was eight lengths away, finishing on well after heinj a long way back. Frisco Mail hung on lont enough to get fourth. The winner's perform a nee was very attractive, and he has mixec his racing without ill effects. A field of 15 lined up for the Spring Plate Ilka, was a strong favourite, with Agitato Dazzling Light and Sun Up fancied in tha order. Ilka and Dazzling Light led Agitat< and Kilceit for half a mile, when Sun Ui ran into third place behind Ilka and Dazß ling Light. On reaching the straight. Sun U] vaa done with, and Ilka was beaten at the distance, where Kilceit and Starmist weie th« most prominent behind Dar.zting Light. Thei Ruwene came with a great run. and in*i wonderful finish Dazzling Light won by»: short head from Rawene, who beat Starmis by a nose, with Kilceit another nose away, Dazzling Light atoned for some recent bac luck, but on this form a mile is «* far ai she i 3 partial to. Rawene on the othei hand, finished'on stronely, and so did Star mist. The favourite. Ilka, and Sun Up. botl failed to stay, while Agitato was not Beet after the first two furlongs. The threi places were filled by Oaks candidates. A field of 33 contested the Linwood Handi cap, the largest number ever seen in a rac< at Riccarton. Winkie's Best was a warn favourite, with Kuhio. Bonogue and Hal Mark best backed among the others. Deep Drive and Clontarf led Winkie's Best to, th( distance, where the first-named pair retired Winkie's Best following suit soon after Monoxide was then left in front, and eh< won by a length from En Route, who finishec very fast and beat Benmure by a head foi second place. Kuhio was two lengths away with The Tank and Winkie's Best well back ahead of the others. The winner is a three year-old filly by' Boniform—Philomela, anc she paid a big dividend. Winkie's Best hac a biic chance and he disappointed. Kuhic faded out at the end and Bonogue was never prominent. .. ~ , The scratching of Tanadees, Kukume and Waeiea left a field of 13 for the New Zealand Ctip. Tarleton wound up favourite, with Sunart and Deucalion best backed among the others, and Musketoon fourth choice i Deucalion and Bumptious led past the stanc from Limelight, Gold Light, Empyrean, Sun art. Dame Straitlace and Carpentier. Inert was not much change at Cults', but going along the back Carpentier unproved Ins position, while Lucinette moved up from nearly last. At the six-furlonc post Deucalion and Bumptious were still showing the way with Carpentier, Lucinette and Limelight next. These five were in a bunch ha.t a mile from home. Racing to the straight, Sunart and Lucinette drew clear of the others, while Musketoon could be seer gradually moving up, but still a long way back. Sunart had Lucinette beaten at the distance, where Gold Light was going well and Musketoon etill running on strongly. Sunart held hi* nlace. winning easily bytwc lengths from Gold Light, who was a similar distance in front of the fast-finis tune Musketoon. Then came Lucinette. followec by Deucalion. Limelight, Bumptious and Tarleton. The win was very popular. Bf Mr. R. A. McKenzie is a regular patron oJ Riccarton meetings and lias not .had toe much luck here. Gold Light finished on surprisingly well under her big weight, Musketoon was giving away too much atari over the last half-mile. Better placed ai that stage, lie probably would have won, Lucinette just failed to see it out after running a great race for a mile and a-half, Deucalion and Limelight were together, several lengths away, but they disappointed, as. indeed, did everything but the first four, Beacon Light and Father O'Flynn, botb of whom are slightly amiss, and also Overhaul, who was not brought up from Dunwrin. were withdrawn from the Welcome Stakes. Runnymede and Lady Cavendish and the' Hazlett bracket, Overdrawn and Circulation were fancied in that order. Ladj Cavendish was smartest to begin, and she led on to the course proper from Mones Order, Currency and Shirley. A little further on Currency was done with, while Cyrene and Runnymede were moving up. A great finish saw Cyrene get up in time tc beat Lady Cavendish by a. neck. Runnymede being half a length away, with Shirley fourth. As a result of an inquiry, the positions of Lady Cavendish and Runnymede were reversed by the stewards on account oi interference near the finish. 'It was an unfortunate incident for Runnymede, whe might have won with a clear passage. Overdrawn out badly and was neve» danorerous. The winrer raced very badly at but the firm ground jus* suited him. He is by Paper Money from Cyre, the dtim of Kilboy. and is owned by Mr. G-, Gerard; whose first big succe«s it was. Lady I Cavendish showed great speed, but was s'f ppinc at the finish. The 19 acceptors lined up for the Apprentices' Handicap. The Banker, Gay Queen and Prompter were the popular picks. Otauru and Cochy Bondhu led a bunch to the straight. Below the distance Cochy Bondbu was in front, with Footfall. Relic and Fresco handy. A little further on Cochy Bondhu retired. Footfall then took charge and won by a length from Chickwhcat, who came with a great run and beat Fresco-in the last strido for second place. Retrospect, finishing fast, was next. The winner's performance was attractive under a big weight. He is in the Derby and may run well. Firestick and Lava, were the only scratchings for the Stewards' Handicap. In a field of 15 Tukia was a bit better backed than Mireusonta, with the Riddiford bracket, Royal Divorce and Fool's Paradise, next in order. Fool's Paradise, Moorland, Poheus and Gaillard showed up prominently in the ealy stages and they comprised the front division to the course proper, where Mcorlnd retired, while Sucgostion and Tukia commenced to r-ove up from the middle of the field. Pencils was in front at the distance, and appeared to be winning comfortably, but he just lasted long enough to stall off Smrgeation by a neck. Tukia, also finishing well, was another neck away. A length and a-half further back came Avola. who came on well from the* distance. Fool's Paradise. Gaillard. Last Crust and Mireusonta, were next.. Suggestion seemed to meet trouble enrly. while Tukia. was also badly placed in the first part. Avola was goinjr as well as anything in the race at the finish. A field of 12 contested the Riccarton Welter HnndicaD. T>eshpm was a good favourite, with Imperial Snark. Boadicea and Paleetrina s.lso well backed. Tresham was first out, but l->«t his Imperial Spark going on from Clandhu, Boadicea, Moun*a<n Lion and Tresham. At the home turn Mountain Lion was leading Tresham. with Imperial a."d Boadicea handy. Little River and Bonnie Winkie moved up on reaching the straight. Tresham headed Mountain Lion a hundred yards from the post and iust lasted long enough to bent, Bonnie Winkie's fast run by a neck, with Little River another ■neck away, and Mountain Lio'i close up_. Tresham's form looked <rood. though the iournev was ouite far enous-h. Like *he previous winner, he is in the Derby. There was an inouiry into the running of Pal»stri r>p. st the request of her owner, but the rider's explanation was accepted. SECOND DAY'S ACCEPTANCES.
