ARRESTS IN INDIA.
EXTREMIST LEADER'S ANGER.
CALCUTTA. Oct. 27. "The peaceful political progress of India has been rendered almost impossible by, the action of the Government in Bengal in arresting the suspected persons on the advice of panicmongers and diehards,'' is the answer of C. R. Das, the extremist leader in Bengal, to the Government campaign authorities. He adds that the campaign has attacked the whole political life of India.
The raids throughout the province, which have now ceased, resulted in 70 arrests. The European press unanimously applauds the strong action of the Viceroy, Lord Reading, but the Indian press denies the necessity for such action.
The arrest of a large nurgber of Indian extremists disclosed a startling plot for armed rebellion throughout the country. Arms had been secretly imported, and a new and powerful type of boitib invented. British troops, in war equipment, with armoured cars made a demonstiaiion in Calcutta.
