MECHANICAL TRAFFIC CONTROL.
; MR. G. W. HUTCHISON'S VIEW.
' Mr. G. W. Hutchison, secretary of the 'A. A.A. who is making a world tour is not . very enthusiastic about mechanical methods of controlling traffic in the United States. The light towers in use in New York, Chicago and other cities are, he thinks, an unnecessarily complicated problem and a lengthy inspection of their practical use proves that they actually retard traffic fey holding it up at intersections where no cross traffic is waiting, just because one or two cars are wanting to cross at an intersection soma blocks along the street. No proper provision is made for traffio desiring to turn at intersections and the rights of pedestrians don't even enter into the sphere. Mr. Hutchison should be able to furnish the A.A.A. with an interesting and valuable report on his return.
