HUSBAND AND WIFE.
MAINTENANCE order sought
sequel TO ASSAULT CASE.
An assault case heard before Mr. J. W. Povnton, S.M., last Monday, when Lot Huckins, aged 45, was sentenced to two months' imprisonment for violent behaviour toward his wife, had a sequel yesterday when Mrs. Huckins applied for a separation and maintenance order before Mr. F. K. : Hunt, S.M.
Complainant said she married defendant ten years ago. In consequence of his cruel treatment, there was a separation in 1920 but a reconciliation was effected two years later. Defendant retained his violent proclivities and iiad periodic fits of temper during which he threatened complainant with a razor. She sought for some provision for herself during her husband's detention in prison. She did not press the issue of separation. Defendant, a returned soldier, said he was partially disabled and was in receipt of a pension. He considered that a reconciliation might be effected. Mr. Hunt: Your wife is a fool to agree to it if you took a razor to her. Why did you assault her ? Defendant: She took a bottle to me. I had to retaliate. Mr. Hunt: Will you sign an order for your wife to receive your pension?— 1 sign I will have no home to go to. Mr. Hunt : You have one now for the next seven weeks. I would not give you a home if you took a razor to me. Defendant agreed to sign the order and the case was adjourned until December 5. ■ ; j
