CONTROL OF CHINA.
ffAIN BATTLE IN PBOGHESS.
CHANG TSO-LIN'S SUCCESSES.
PAYMENT FOR REQUISITIONS.
By Telegraph--Press Renter. PEKING, Oct. 10. Confused despatches from Shan-hai-kwan indicate that the main battle lor the control of China bas been joinod. There was heavy fighting yesterday, which resulted in the capture of the city of Chih-feng. This is the most important victory for Marshal Chain# Tso-lin's Mukden army to date. The Mukden line now irons from Shan-hai-kwan north-west 90 miles to Pins* chuan, north 90 miles to Chih-feng. This line gives Chang Tso-lin a firm grip on the occupied Chih-li territory, which he is popularly consolidating through cash payments for supplies seized, and distributing relief grain to destitute section*. These acts of the victor are unprecedented in Chinese warfare. Officials at Chang's headquarters deny the nso of gas on any front. They claim that they are fighting under civilised rales. It is, however, known that the wire entanglements at Shan-hai-kwan were electrified. A communiqne issued this evening claims another victory on the Shan-hai-kwan front. The Feng-tien troops are retreating.
