DEFENCE NOTES.

The Northern Depot Corps of Signals (P. and T.) concluded their second weekend camp last evening. The weather was all that could be desired, and the training was carried out (with great zest and enthusiasm.

In spite of the threatening weather on Saturday, a large number of rjfleinen made the trip to Penrose to practise for the forthcoming regimental district riflemeeting.

The 3rd Battery, N.Z.A., will parade to-morrow evening at 7.30 o'dock in the Drill Hall, Rutland Street. The battery N.C.O. class, under the instruction of the battery commander, Major Newman, is making sound progress. The class is conducted on alternate Tuesdays.

The firit of a series of tactical exercises for officers was conducted during the week-ead. Lieutenant-Colonel J £ Duigan. D.5.0., chief staff officer," and some 20 territorial officers journeyed to Mount Wellington, and worked apross country to the Pakuranga ridge. The officers were divided into syndicates, each under a senior officer, working out the problems set by Colonel Duigan. On the completion of the work the schemes were discussed and the weak points demonstrated by actual work on the ground. These tactical exercises should be of great benefit not only to the junior officers, but also as a "refresher" for the older and more experienced officers. Captain G. B. Parkinson, N.Z.8.C., officer commanding; detachment R.N.Z. A. Northern Command, was present, and gave an interesting talk on the 3.7 "Howitzers.

The Headquarters Squadron, 3rd A.M.R. (Lieutenant Beid), is now conducting a Hotchkiss gun class for the officers and N.C.O.'s on alternate Thursdays? • *

The Northern Depot Medical Corps paraded last Thursday. The discipline was excellent and the smartness of the corps commendable.

The instructional claes for officers and N.C.O.'s will be held, as usual, to-morrow-night at, 7.30 o'clock.

The Colonial Auxiliary Forces officers* decoration has been awarded to Lieutenant. W, W. Dutton, of the Wellington Regiment.
