TESTING MINERAL WEALTH.
WESTLAND POSSIBILITIES. OIL AND GOLD PROSPECTING. [BT TELEGRAPH.QJW CORRESPONDENT.] CHEISTCHUECH. Monday. Acting under instructions from a North Island syndicate, Messrs. Park and Murdoch have applied for a large area of country in North Westland for the purpose of oil prospecting. The territory lies on both sides of tho Teremakau River, ranging north from the Kuraara district. Attention has been drawn to the possibilities by the report of the Government geologist on oil deposits, and the syndicate concerned will carry out an extensive prospecting scheme. The area of country marked off is upwards of 30,444 acres, partly in Westland County, and partly in Grey.
A gold prospecting scheme is also about to be taken up by the Rimu Gold Dredging Company, Ltd., in the Waimea district of the Westland County. Four ordinary prospecting areas have been applied for, and it is understood that about 1000 acres will be tested with a keystone borer. It is understood that the same company has other important mining schemes in mind in the Westland district. The encouraging success of dredging south of Hokitika has "satisfied the authorities that gold is in tho district, and the company proposes to carry out prospecting over several months.
