TO-MORROW'S CONTESTS.

DEVONPORT V. ATHLETIC.

MARIST TO MEET RICHMOND.

The Auckland League senior championship competition will he continued to-morrow afternoon. The principal contest will he between Devonport, who lire love! with Marist at the head of the list, and Athletic, 011 No. 1 ground at. Carlaw Park. Devonport put up a great performance in defeating Marist lust week, and will make every effort to retain their position. Marist play Richmond on No. 2 ground, and they, too, will lake no chances of losinjr their chance of annexing the title. Though the competition is in a very interesting stage, it is not probable that to-morrow's matches will affect the issue, as oil recent form neither Athletic nor Richmond is likely to prove victorious. However, there is always room for a surprise. The. other senior matches will be Newton v. Ellerfdie at Ellerslie, and Ponsonby v. Manners at Maruikau. These should be fairly evenly contested games. The junior competitions will also be continued.

LAWN TENNIS.

THE DAVIS CUP CONTEST.

AUSTRALIA'S DEFEAT.

General disappointment was felt at the severe defeat the Australians received at. the hands of the Americans in the challenge round for the Davis Cum It has often been contended that Tilden and Johnston were the guardians of the cup, and that the remainder of the American players were an average lot. In fact, it was only last year that Anderson, on his return from America, stated that Richards, ranking number throe, could be beaten by many of the first-class players. According to American reports he has greatly improved his game this season, hi« showing against Patterson and Oltara Wood, when he won. from each in straight sots, demonstrates this. The account of the doubles makes curious reading. The ideal of doubles', play is. of course, combination, and it is generally, found that a star singles player does not make a good partner. Singles and doubles arc two distinct branches of the game. Yet we road of Patterson and Wood teaming perfectly, while Tilden and Johnston were awkward, continually getting in one another's way and being unable to dovetail their efforts. But by sheer force of strokes on Johnston's part, and good individual play on Tilden'a, they were able to win easily, losing the first set only. This illustrates the vast superiority of Amerioan tennis oyer that of the rest of the. world. It is a xjity., for in time it must havo its effect on the, interest taken in these contests, and the best thing that could happen is for the cup to leave America, temporarily at least. Australia seems the only nation with a hope of lifting the cup in the near future. She had her best player. Anderson at home Her latest hope seems to bo Gar Ilone, and the account of the last match between the combined Australian universities' team and the Stanford (America) University team makes interesting reading. In the first series of matches played the Americans were, superior, but. they had to lower their colours in the final test, recently played, in which lan Melnnes, of Victoria, and Gar Hone, of South Australia, produced startling tennis. Both these students have been hampered by their studies in'the past, but, have now struck form. Melnnes is a stylist of tho first water, but at present. Jacks stamina, while Hone, standing <ift. 3in., is a giant and hits a mighty hall. Melnnes, ii*ea faultless display, beat. Hinchley (America), G—'. <>—and Hone beat Mcrtz (America). 6—2. (> —; while these two Australians, in doubles, beat the American pair, C>—l, 6—3. There seems little doubt that in JTone Australia has the material for the moulding of a Davis Cup singles player. There are still, ot course. Sehlesinger and Kalms. The former's best showing was ; n the American national singles, when ho survived several rounds and met Johnston, who beat him, (I—o—3. 15—3, a better score than Patterson's, but not good enough. Kalms was beaten in the same event by Dean Morthoy after a great fight, but neither of these performances caii bo considered star tennis. Aucklanders will be disappointed to learn that the Australians will not b'.' returning via. Auckland, having booked by the Sonoma, direct to Australia, from San Francisco.
