(Receiy&d 5.5 p.m.) Eouter. NEW TOBK. Sept. 1& In the first international polo match at Meadowbrook to-day, America de-« feated Britain by 16 goals to 5. Tha weather was fine and the field was in good condition. Largs crowds witnesseq the game. * The Prince of Wales attended, accom> panied by his party. The teams took the field in brilliant sunshine, the bio* sweaters of the British players contrast* ing vividly with the all-white clothes cl the Americans. : , • The Americans opened with a sharp attack, but England recovered the ball alt the goal mouth. A scrimmage ensued in which Hitchcock was about to boon when Atkins brilliantly rode ofL Eng* land then countered and, taking the ball to the opposing posts, gained the first goal off a free shot by Lacey, awarded on a foul. The Americans' back-handing was specially brilliant, and play in the first period throughout was of a spectacular character. The Americans started thq third period with a lead of 3 goals to 1. The British team was fighting pluckily. As the game progressed the superiority was overwhelmingly demon-: strated, and at the beginning of tbej fourth period they were leading 7 to 1. The game then became a perfect} riot, and at half-time the score was Ift goals to 1 in the Americans' favour. AS the end of the sixth period the Ameri-< cans were leading by 13 to i.
