The senior championship matches under the auspices of the Auckland Hockey Association were continued on Saturday under ideal weather niid playing conditions. After a strenuous contest, St. Luke's defeated Mount Eden by 2 goalß to 1. On tho adjoining ground, Areta gained a two-goal win over University, tho scores being 5 goals St.' Luke's were quickly on the attack against Mount Eden, the forwards showing plenty of dash in several quick rushes, which wero repulsed by excellent back PW by Brown and Kadcliffe. A feature of the play was the excellence of the defensive work by the respective rearguards. Spirited forward movements kept the r.lay swinging from end to end of the field, and clover stickwork and intercepting by . the backs wore in evidence in keeping tho circles clear. Eventually, after a good combined rush, Craig had an opportunity, but hia snot was well stopped by Rankin. Mount Eden had a turn on tho offensive, a good > move/ mont. forcing St. Luke's. Clever stickwork by Steele checked Mount Eden, and St. Luke'o were attacking stronglyt when halftime arrived, without any score. Upon resuming, St. Luke's, per medium of clever stickwork and good combination, set up a strenuous attack. After several efforts had teen stemmed by sound work by Jaffrey and Ritchie, Barnes made ft Kood opening, centring beautifully. Hookham smothered Rankin, and scored for St Luko's. Sevoral advances by Mount Eden gave them the advantage, but tho forward work lacked finish, and St. Luke's backs ro pulsed the invasions. After desultory play m mid-field, A. Williams broke through in tho centre, and after a splendid run drew tho goalkeeper and scorod with > a good shot, giving St. Luke's a two-point lead. Mount Edon's forwards performed some smart moves. Potter, D. Alexander, and Giles being prominent in good combined play. In the closing stages, D. Alexandei carried through into the circle, and Potter scored Mount Eden's only goal, tho game ending with the scores unchanged. In the opening stages of the gamo between Areta and Ujaivernity, the latter showed to advantago in many spirited attacking movements. Lack of ability to make the moat of good openings wag noticeable in the forwards. Over-eagerness ond bunching were in the main responsible. The first score came from a good- flank attack, Brown turning tho centring hit to account and netting. Arota's van showed up prominently in a hard offensive, R, Carter scoring.
