DEFENCE NOTES.

EX BAMBOD. St. Stephen's College Cadets will commence their annual "barracks" at Narrow Neck to-day. Given \fine weather, an excellent week's work in infantry, musketry, physical and recreational training should result.

Lieutenant-Colonel R. St. J. Beere, D.5.0., of Wellington, has been awarded the Colonial Auxiliary Forces Officers' Decoration.

The system of consolidated training followed at Rawene recently was commendable. The trainees were taken by launch from the different bays in tho district, and training was carried out for the whole day, the trainees being returned to thenhomes each evening. The launch runs made an excellent outing for the boys, and all regretted the conclusion of the training.

The fortnightly parade of the 20th Pack Battery (Lieutenant A. A Currey) took place last Tuesday. The battery *is making rapid progress, and the enthusiasm of the men is commendable. The battery week-end camp* will be heid early next month.

Major W. R. Golden, of the reserve of officers, has been appointed to the command of the 13th Battery.

Tho instructional class for officers and N.C.O.'s of the Ist Battalion, Auckland Begiment (Countess of RanfurlyV Own), will be held to-morrow evening in the Drill Hall, Rutland Street, at .7.30 o'clock.

The Akarana and City and Suburban Rifle Clubs will officially open their shooting season on Saturday, September 27. .

The 3rfi Battery, N.Z.A. (Major C. N. Newman), will parade in the Drill Hall, Rutland Street, to-morrow evening at 7.30 o'clock.

The annual course for the R.N.Z.A, concluded at Trentham last week. The percentage of hits recorded during the shoots was excellent.

The following interesting extracts from the orders of tho Governor of Gibraltar appeared in tho "Green Howards Gazette," the regimental journal of the old 19th Yorkshire Regiment in the year 1790;—N0 gaming to be allowed in wine houses, including the games of the Devil and the Taylor's skittles. All oysters which come from Portugal are to be in the sea for at least- a fortnight before they are brought into the garrison,--as they are found very unwholesome without this precaution. No billiards to bo played after second gunfire; if any keeper of a billiard table disobeys this order his tableshall be broken in pieces and burnt on the public parade. If sentries are attacked by bullocks in the streets or on the lino wall they are to retire into art embrasure or get upon the parapet, but not to fire inconsiderately.
